How To Remove Norton or McAfee Internet Security Suite When Uninstall Fails

Occasionally uninstalling Norton or McAfee internet security suites, or their stand alone antivirus products, fails, leaving you unable to remove them.

This happens frequently enough that both companies make removal tools available that remove every last trace of the product.

Remove Symantec Norton Antivirus / Internet Security Suite

  1. Go to the Norton Removal tool page.
  2. Download the correct tool for the product you need to uninstall.
  3. Save the file to your desktop or click run to run it immediately.
  4. If you saved the file, double click it to run the uninstall procedure.
  5. Reboot when prompted.

Remove McAfee Antivirus / Internet Security Suite Using The McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool

  1. Download the McAfee Removal Tool.
  2. Save the MCPR.EXE file to your desktop or any folder of your choice.
  3. Navigate to the MCPR.EXE file and double click it to run the uninstall procedure.
(Vista users must right click the file and select Run as Administrator)
  4. Reboot when prompted.

Reinstall Antivirus and Firewall Software

Do not be without antivirus and firewall software. Either reinstall your existing version, or if it is a couple of years old you would be better off buying the latest version.

Alternatively there are free products available for home use. More information on our recommended Free Software Guide.
