Do I Need A Wireless Router?

As you will probably have noticed, some broadband providers include a free wireless router with their packages and others do not, but do you actually need wireless?

NO!

If your computer is close enough to a telephone socket and you do not have a laptop then you do not need a wireless router.

Pleas Note: If you sign up with a provider who sends you a free wireless router then you will need to either turn off the wireless functionality or setup the wireless security to stop others from using your usage allowance without your knowledge.

YES!

If you have a wireless enabled laptop that you would like to use online from all areas of the house then yes a wireless router would be a good idea.

Also if your computer is in a different room from the telephone socket, then you may prefer to use wireless than to have an extension fitted. In this case you may also need to purchase a wireless network card for your PC.

I want wireless but the provider I am about to sign up with does not provide one for free.
Most broadband providers who do not supply wireless as part of the package will sell you one for an additional fee. Alternatively you might want to consider one from the Recommended Wireless Modem Routers section below.

Are there other options to wireless?
Yes, devices can be purchased that will send a network signal to other rooms through the mains electrical wiring. These are are a great idea if your pc will be a large distance from or several floors above the router and you are worried about the wireless coverage.
