How to auto disconnect after closing Internet applications

If you are not prompted to disconnect after closing Internet applications but would like to be, follow these instructions. They are relevant to both dial-up and some broadband users.

  1. Got to the 'Internet Options' control panel, either from Control Panel or from Internet Explorer's Tools menu.
  2. Click the 'Connections' tab.
  3. Highlight your Dial-Up Network connection and click settings.
  4. Under 'Dial-Up Settings' click Advanced.
  5. Click the 'Disconnect when connection may no longer be needed' check box to select it.
  6. You may also want to click the 'Disconnect if idle for X minutes' checkbox
  7. Click O.K.

If your settings are already set as above but you are still not prompted to disconnect, this could be because Windows or one of your applications such as Anti-Virus, is in the middle of downloading updates.
