Compare the specifications of my recommended LCD monitors in the tables below. You should be looking for high Screen Resolution and small Pixel Pitch for finer detail, low Response Time for faster screen refresh and high Brightness and Contrast Ratio for a more vibrant image.
In my opinion one of the most important factors to look for, and one that many people ignore, is a high viewing angle. With a low viewing angle you have to be sat in front of the screen with the tilt set just right in order to see the image as it should be seen. This is a very good indication of a cheap, poor quality display.
